Water Filtration Or Water Softener For Well Water?

I have a well and the water has a very high iron content. It turns everything brown and dingy within a few days. I want to install something to take care of the problem but I am not sure which way to go.

I have been told that a water filtration system is what I need and other people have told me that a water softener system will take care of the iron and sediment and give me softer water at the same time.

I have a microscreen filter on the water at the pump. It turns rust colored and I have to flush it frequently. I doesn't really seem to do anything.

Which way should I go?
