My old portable dishwasher was set up this way but it was like that when I got the house so I didn't do it.

Can I just take the back of the new portable dishwasher, change the hoses so that they are long enough to run through the cabinets to a hot water line and drain pipe? The extra hot water line I have has it's own shut off valve and then the drain hose would just go to the main kitchen drain.

Is this possible? I know they sell conversion kits to go from portable to under the cabinet but I don't want to pay for the extra stuff I won't need like the toe plate.

Hey Missyjane,

yes it's possible. You will have to convert the hot water inlet in the DW to 3/8ths copper and lengthen the discharge hose if necessary to connect to a kitchen disposal or a branch tailpiece. Good luck Tom

Why do I have to go to copper? I was hoping to just cut off the piece that hooks to the faucet and lengthen the hoses.

Because to use the in let hose there would have to be a hot water hose bib and I've never seen a hose bib connected to a hot water line unless it was for a wash machine. If you wished to connect and disconnect the hot water to the faucet each time you washed dishes I guess it would work but I thought you wanted to make this a permanent. Cheers, Tom

I just cut the kitchen tap connnector off my portable dishwasher, then connected the end of the water tube to a hot water copper pipe which I put in with a shutoff. I then had to put in a drain conversion kit on the back of the dishwasher but had to modify an extension up from the floating air value because the water would overflow if I didn't. Not sure if this is because I only used 1/2" copper for my drain pipe....may be just too small to take away the waste water fast enough?? Comments anyone????

Hey Wellgo, your are right, your drain pipe is too small but did you notice this post was almost 2 years ago. I think Tom and Jane have moved on by now.
