tub leaking into downstairs ceiling

My husband and I have been frustrated. We found the ceiling under the tub was wet. Then we could not get any hot water out of the tub faucet. My husband took it all apart, replaced the faucet and retiled around it all.It still leaks from somewhere. He has retiled a few tiles around the tub.No visible problems. Before we take the whole tub out, I want to cut a hole in the ceiling downstairs. It needs to be repaired anyway.Wouldnt that tell us what is leaking??There are 3 different areas in the ceiling downstairs.I put blue in the toilet, and we do not see any blue downstairs. We have another bathroom adjacent to this one, with only a shower stall.Could it be running from there??? Help!!

OK here is the bad news but you may have guessed it already, you need to rip out that ceiling due to that much water, not just cut a hole. Mold starts to grow 12-24 hours after being saturated. Once the ceiling is down you should be able to isolate fixtures by shutting off their supply. No hot water and a leak were probably not related. I;d shut off the water before going to bed and place a box fan blowing into the ceiling cavity. In the morning get a flashlight ahave someone turn the main back on while you watch for the first sign of water. If you get no water then I'd suspect the toilet when it flushes or the tub when it drains or is in use.
