I am installing a drain in my laundry room floor. What type of trap should I be using. The trap will not be getting normal use like a sink would. My fear is if I use a normal trap it will have a smell to if because lack of water running on a daily basis.

Since you're worried about trap seal evaporation a regular floor drain with a built in trap is out of the question unless you fill the trao wuth motor oil to prevent it.
another option would be to install a deep seal trap, (see image) along with a trapless floor drain,( see image). Installing a regular floor drain in conjunction with a deep seal trap would be double trapping a fixture and that's against code. A deep seal trap would allow more liquid to remain as a seal and the evaporation process would take much longer. But in time even that would evaporate. So, if you just want the floor drain for accidental spills your best, and cheapest) bet would be to install a regular floor drain and fill the trap with motor oil. Note: Floor drain are the only trapped fixture that doesn't require its own vent.
