I have a question about shut off valves for plumbing on 80 year old home in Omaha. Does anyone have a ballpark idea of what plumber charges should be to replace shut off valve inside (basement) and outside at the street? The water company said to call a plumber as the valve at the street is inoperable. That is why I called them! Please help! Thanks!

In my area the shutoff at the street is the City's responsibility. You might want to double check to see if that's the case in your area.

The inside one's a piece of cake. The outside one will cost you some big bucks if it's your responsibility. They'll need to excavate a hole about 4'x4' wide...and however deep down it is just to get to it.

I just had a nearly identical job done here in central Ohio and it was $750 (for the outside job).

With the water shut off by the supplier, the inside part should be able to be done in an hour or so by a good plumber.

Thanks. Actually I am writing from Florida and the house with the water valve problems is in Omaha -- my mother's house. My mom passed away in March and my brother is acting as personal representative. He is in way over his head. When I talked to him this morning he had a plumber at the house this morning to give an estimate to replace both valves. I thought the outside one was the city's job, too. I will personally call MUD in Omaha to find out -- especially after reading your response. Thank you very, very much!!!

Okay -- wow -- I just got off the phone with Metropolitan Utilities District "M.U.D." (gas/water/sewer) in Omaha. Anything from the main to and throughout the house is the customer's responsibility. My husband reminded me that we had two shut off valves at the street -- one for potable water and one for the landscape water -- replaced at no cost to us by our water company here in Orlando. In Omaha EVERYTHING is paid out of the homeowner's pocket. I guess I'll write out a check. If my mother was still living I'd be writing out a check to help her. At least I can help my brother as he tries to deal with the estate issues. Thanks so much for your help. Live and learn! And appreciate not having MUD for your utilities company where YOU live.
