Shower Drain Leak

My upstairs shower drain is leaking. I narrowed it down to the leak is at the drain itself and not the pipes. The drain is an Oatey brass caukless drain. The white 2" pipe has about 1/4" verticle play, that is why I think the leak is there. I bought a new drain so I could see how it works (I am soooo hoping I don't have to remove the shower or ask the ex for assistance). The drain comes with a flimsy tool to screw and ring on the inside on the top. I used thsat tool to unscrew the one on the shower and it is starting to bend. It will not budge. What can I use to loosen it? Is the play in the pipe normal?

Sounds like the putty/ Silicon Jel drain seal's ruptured, (see image) Let the drain up nand clean off the old seal. Run a small ring of putty or Silicon Jel under the drain lip and reinstall. Good luck, tom

Tom, The ex didn't follow your suggestion. He replaced the large black rubber ring. The shower still leaked. He suggested to rip the ceiling apart and change the drain. I told him to try the $2.00 fix first. I bought a handy one-application of silicone gel and he applied it under the drain lip. It works! You're the man!
