Shower Diverter pipe stem

My copper pipe that the Diverter attaches to has deep grooves in it from where the previous installer must have turned the spout while it was tightened on thus causing a deep circular grrove with in the copper pipe itself. My problem is this... when I replaced the diverter spout the new one leaks water from behind the spout "a lot ", what do I need to do ? Please help.. Thanks you ,

Mike in AZ

Check the "O" ring and if its twisted then lube it with grease and try again. good luck. Tom

shower diverter stem

Thanks for the reply. What if the o-ring is not twisted but lies over the deep groove from the twisting of the last spout? If the o-ring is positioned over the groove might it leak?

Thanks again,

Mike in AZ

Good morning Mike,
Yes, If the "O" ring is positioned over the groove it might not have a decent seal. However, since the groove was caused by the retaining clamp which is located ahead of the "O" ring it's doubtful the "O" ring would even hit the groove. My bet is the "O" ring is out of position in the spout due to friction from a unlubed copper pipe. check the "O" ring. lube both the "O" ring and the pipe and try again. Regards, Tom
