Oh Lord, I live in a 3 family home and I have there are 9 persons living in the home. (5 are tenants) and my family 4) anyway, lately, I have been smelling a sewerage smell...I am so embarrassed. I don't think I have a septic tank....we live in the bronx, ny....brick home. I read that I can pour bleach into the toliet? Is that so? Also, my tenants are restaurant workers and wash their clothes by hand...do you think that may be a problem....they do this EVERY night....I am afraid that the soap powder is messing up our pipes...think they use tide. I also have unfinished work in our lower apartment, where sheet rock has to be place in the ceiling (right where the sewer pipe is....
I need some advice...is it something that can be resolved inexpensively?
Did this smell come on all of a sudden or gradually? Where is it the worst? Tank? Bowl or around the base? Is there a chance that you have a vent that's froze up? Putting bleach in the bowl and letting it set overnight sometimes helps. Unless your pipes are clogged up with soap I fail to see any harm in your tennets washing their clothes every night. I tried answering to this thread last night, but the stupid server kept telling me "there's a problem with the Ask Me Help Desk database". Oh well...
Anyway, looks like Tom beat me to it. I just have one thing to add, for future reference: if you indeed live in Bronx, NY, then you do NOT have a septic tank. You are on a city sewer system.
