    Sewer gas smell in bathroom sink
    I am experiencing sewer gas smell when I run water in sink - it dissipates shortly, but is there the next time I run the water in the drain. How can I get rid of it??

    The first thing you should do is pull the stopper and shine a light down the drain. You will see a small rod down there. Hair can catch and build up on this rod and impede the flow. Take and hook any hair that may be down there. Most bad oders in bathroom drains come from rotting hair mixed with grease from the soap. Try this. Tonight before you go to bed pour 1/2 gallon of bleach down the drain and let it set overnight. Next morning flush it down with a few large pans of boiling water. The bleach will start to dissolve and soften the hair and make it slippery and the boiling water will melt the grease and flush the mess out into the main. Now see if that smelly drain doesn't smell sweeter? Hope this helps . Tom

    We have a smell of sewer gas that has recently been noticed coming from the upstairs bathroom sink. Had smells coming from basement drains before and put water in the trap to help.

    This smell seems to come after / during running water as if brushing your teeth.

    Hi Cullpepper:

    I would have you climb under the sink and remove the retaining nut (see picture). Then pull back on the horizontal pivot rod just enough to remove the POP-UP stopper inside the sink. Once removed you can clear the pop-up area and the pop-up of any residues. Then reverse the steps to reinstall... ;)

    Then, I would take some bleach and I would run some down the overflow hole in the sink... this will help with any other bacteria that is creating other odors!You could use an old turkey baster or make a funnel out of paper and try to pour the bleach into the hole that way.

    Hopefully, that will make a difference for a long time!
