Sewage smell lurking from bathtub

Asked Jul 31, 2006, 04:42 PM — 2 Answers
I have a sewage smell coming from my bathtub. I even closed the drain and smell it...It comes in through the small hole above the drain that is there for in case of an overflow. We have extended the pipe outside, thinking maybe it might have caught a draft of air and pushed the stench into the house, but the smell still came back. Any suggestions? Should I call a plumber? Is this on us or could it possibly be a city issue?

Hi Kathrina,

Most bad smells from tub/showers and lavatories come from rotting hair matted in with grease in the drain lines. Try this for the smell. Tonight before bedtine Take a 1/2 gallon of bleach and pour down the drain and let set over night. Next morning ,(and this is important) flust out esch drain with two large pans of boiling water to loosen the grease and flush the mess out. Let me know how it worked. Tom

Might check to see if you have a trap under it also. This would be a you shape pipe.
