Replaced diverter stem but bathtub faucet still runs water when I turn on shower
When I turn on my shower my bathtub faucet runs a good amount of water from it. So I replaced my diverter stem brand new as well as beveled washer as that is what the old one had. It worked great for a day, but when I went to shower this morning I had the same problem. When I turned on my shower water still poured out the tub faucet. I have a 3 handle set up.

Remove diverter valve again. With diverter removed turn on the water, both hot and cold. Briefly to flush out any debris that might be trapped in the valve body

Thanks for the tip. I removed the stem cleared the lines as per your suggestion, re-installed in the open position so I could backseat it and it seems to be working properly. Hopefully it stays that way. Thank you!

    Hi guys,

I'm having this same problem for some time now. Would very much appreciate any suggestions as I don't have funds to call plumber or help.

Harold very helpful suggestions. I was unsuccessful at replacing my diverter valve as could not find exact match. Tried Home Depot and a local place a guy told me they have everything.

Diverter looks fine and not broken. Also was installed only couple years ago for my dad. Not sure what kind of facet it is.

I put old diverter on AFTER I flushed debris as suggested above.

I'm wondering if there's a specific POSITION or ALIGNMENT that I'm not getting right.

Keep in mind it was NOT working correctly and turning off the bottom facet flow when I started this.

I have pics I took of exactly how I found diverter before I removed and tried to replace.

I think the part number for diverter is R 407845

If it helps I uploaded pics of my set up and parts here

    shower diverter

    Thanks again for your help!

First there is writing on the escutcheons but I can read it. That is probably the brand.

Second, the guy at Home Depot is a salesman, not a plumber.

With the diverter disassembled make sure that the stem extension, (the part shown is slide 3) engages the cartridge (the part shown in slides 6,7 and 8) and actually turns the inner part of the cartridge. I can't tell but those two parts probably only fit together one way.

If the stem extension engages and turns the inner cylinder of the cartridge, reassemble the diverter in the body of the faucet with the stop at the bottom. That would be opposite what is shown in slide 4. It looks like the cartridge will fit in the body of the faucet in either of two ways and was probably installed incorrectly.
All this is assuming that you have the correct cartridge.

I found this site by looking for P/N r407845 and your pictures are exactly like my part. There is a black plastic sleeve missing on your cartridge this is why water flows to shower and spigot. I have figured out what I need now where to get this part? And who makes it? Any answers please e-mail [email protected]

I have recently replaced my faucet valve stems and the shower devirter stem in the bath tub, and now the only thing that water is flowing through is the shower head and not the spot going in the tub. Also the shower devirter only makes a 1/4 turn.
