pumping though a old submersible pump

I have a submersible well pump that i beleive has burnt out. I was just wondering if anyone knew if you can just leave that pump in the well and put another pump inside the house and pump right through that old pump or do you have to pull the old pump out? Thanks!

If the pump is only twenty feet or so down (unlikely), then you could try a jet pump and see if it works. However, since submersible pumps are usually a great more than twenty feet down, then the suction side of a jet pump won't pull water that far.
When all is said and done, you are probably looking at having to pull up the pump. Do you know how far down it is??
