Some plungers you are able to twist and pull up, these have a notch that hooks onto the shaft. Others you will have to loosen the nut from the drain and pull the shaft out, then pull the plunger. If you do this it will cause a leak under the sink unless you put the shaft back in and tighten down the nut.
