I'm going to be putting in a bathroom in the basement of my new house but I'm not sure what the connections are for. I have a 12"X12 box right in the concrete floor. I haven't cut it open but I think that is for the shower? I have one larger capped tube coming straight up and I think that is for the toilet? I also have two smaller (3" or so) capped pipes coming straight up. One is about a foot from the large pipe and one is by itself closer to the outside wall. What are they all for? Is one fo the smaller ones for a sink and one a venting pipe? If so, how can I tell what is what?

your best bet would be to contact the plumber that roughed in the job. Having said that, let me give it a try. The 12 X12 box is a "dapout " for a bath tub. We don't box out our shower stub ups. THe larger pipe is the toilet. The pipe next to the wall will pick up the lavatory and continue out the roof to vent the group. Since you failed to tell me the exact placement of the last pipe it could be a vent off the toilet or a stubup for a shower enclosure. Ya just got my best shot, Tom

So I have a tub/shower connection, a toilet and sink drain but what is the remaining line. It is the same size as the sink drain but it located about 1 1/2 feet from the outer wall and a few feet from the tub/shower connection wich is near the wall too. Would that be another drain or a vent pipe? Is there a way to find out myself by opening it?

If you could send a picture down the line it would make it so much simpler.
Let me4 give you some rough in measures so you'll have some idea of where you're at. The toilet roughs in at 12" off the wall, tub roughs at 15 1/2" off the side wall and 1 1/2" off the front plate. The lavatory's always next to a wall and is picked up with a tee that extends into a vent that goes out the roof. As for the last pipe, my hunch it's a shower drain stub up. If it was a vent it wouldn't be out in the center of the floor. Did you attempt to contact the company that did the job. After we do a house we always keep the working plans on file. they could tell you right off. Regards, Tom

Here is a picture of it. The two in the forefront are the same distance from the wall. The one on the far left is on the same line as the large one in the back the runs all the way through the ceiling. The box is on the right in the back and the other pipe is what is not known.

It would make it a lot easier if you would snap some future wall lines so I could visualize the layout. The line next to the wall is a vent for the group from the cleanout tee up and a main drain from the tee down into the cement. Our codes do not allow 3" for a toilet and 1 1/2" drainage lines under the slab but if you can snap some wall lines with a chalk line I'll be able to tell you more. What's that line snapped over to the left of the picture? Open up the box and see if there isnt a trap with a raiser under there. Waiting for your reply, Tom

I was told from the builder that the black box is the shower/tub drain and the other longer pipe near the back wall is for the shower as well. (the two in the forefront are toilet and sink) Why would I have two drains for the shower/tub?

Because the plumber roughed in for both a tub and a walkin shower. He left you a option. Depending on which one you decide to install you can cap off the other.
