Pipes behind toilet making loud continuous banging & rattling after flushing
After taking a quick 4 day trip to Ottawa, I came home to find that my toilet had started to make extremely loud banging and rattling noise after it's been flushed and almost filled. It started after it was filled at first and now has progressed to where the tank only has to be filled halfway to happen. There have been no renovations done on this house either while we were here or away and absolutely no one used this bathroom in our absence. I've read that it could be water hammer, although when described, water hammer is most often described as a loud short bang, whereas the banging from my pipes can sometimes go for a minute. I'm not quite sure as to what to do here and am trying to avoid calling a plumber if at all possible as I'm a full-time student and mother. Thanks so much

Flush the toilet and take the tank top off. When the noise starts, lift the float to shut off the water. If the noise goes away, you probably have a bad fill valve. Easy to install a new one-shut off the water, flush the toilet, take off the water supply riser and loosen the nut that holds the fill valve to the tank. Get a small bucket to catch the leftover water in the tank. Remove the old fill valve. If you have a ball float, do not replace it, get a Fluidmaster or other similar fill valve. Follow installation instructions with the new valve. Good luck and let us know it that solves the problem.

My bet is that you have a float ball ballcock. Try this. Flush the toilet and when it starts the noise start turning the angle stop shut off clockwise until the noise stops. If that doesn't work click on back and we'll go to "plan B" Cheers, Tom
