outside spigot

I have an outdoor spigot that that water comes out of the handle when it is turned on. How do I properly pack it?

Tighten the packing or bonnet nut, that nut around the stem. Tighten about 1/8 to 1/4 turn.

That usually happens when the spigot is not used too often. The large washer under the bonnet nut hardens and starts leaking when used. Do as Harold suggested in reply #2.

Hi All:

If tightening like Harold suggested doesn't work then you may need to go to a home supply store and pick up a little graphite packing rope and wrap that around the stem just under the packing nut a couple times. Then tighten down as recommended and that will fix for sure....just don't overtighten and crack the packing nut...ok??

Let us know how you make out...
