old shower failing, fix diverter?

hi i have an old shower, connected to the bath in standard fashion. just lately the shower pressure from the head has dropped radically. at the same time, the diverter has stopped functioning properly, popping out when the bath is running, switching the shower on.
i've followed some advice and managed to get the cap off, i've tried turning the metal tip shown below as advised until i am blue in the face, but to no avail. whats the next step to replacing this anyone?

Shut off the water to the house, remove the knobs and the covers as I indicated on the center one image 1, once they are removed you will need the socket or the wrench Image 3 and remove all three stems see image 2, take them to a plumbing supply and get new washers as indicated on the picture, replace all 3 and install them you will be ok, Good Luck.

thank you so much for the response, i got the chrome off and managed to remove the unit with a 27/32 socket (for the record). the thread was completely worn away. got a replacement for $17.
