    Old Cast Iron Sewer
    We dug up our basement today, what a mess

    Our sewer was backing up every now and then

    This is what we found

    We have had 3 plumbers here today and they all give us different fixes

    I have been trying to upload a picture but it says there all too big

    It has some strange running trap on a crazy angle

    I gues the question is do we need to go through the house to replace this mess?

    Should we attempt this mess or let the very expensive plummers do this. My husband is very handy with many things but has never done this. If he had step by step I know he could do it. Thank you for looking

    You can put the pics in the paint program and go to images and resize it.

    I've had better luck getting pictures down to size (after resizing in paint) by converting them to JPEG. Edit in Paint then use the Save As option on file menu.

    I would give some serious thought to replacing the drainage. However, repiping the house for water's a snap compared to replacing the drainage system. Sure, we can give hubby the basics and start him out but there will be things he will run into that almost demands that we o be on the site to help. Then walls will have to be opened up. That means drywall work, perhaps some carpenter work and painting. My advice would be to get three estimates for replacing the entire system. If the cast iron's OK in the upper part of the house then why not get estimates to replace the underground section of the cast iron. That would be a lot easier and simpler and one that hubby might do himself with a little help from the plumbing experts on board here. Let us know what you decide. Tom,

    Hi there thanks for your reply's.

    We had it fixed yesterday. Nice new pipes. The quote was for 6 hours of work but it only took 2.5 so not bad at all.
