Hi There, I have an old lavatory which makes quite a nise when it flushes. Is there a simple way to reduce this noise? Thanks for your help!

You probably need to give us more info about the toilet and the ballcock. Some old toilets are noisey and not much can be done. Does the noise seem to come from the tank and ballcock area or is it more the suction in the bowel?

Hi Thanks for the quick reply, and sorry for the missed information. Its an American Standard over 20 years old and the noise appears to come from the toilet bowl proper as the water goes through the pipe at the bottom of the water storage unit on top of the lavatory bowl, I believe its called a cistern, into the bowl. I was thinking they may make some sound abrorbing material that one could put onto the lavatory seat cover, as its down when the toilet is flushed. Thanks again for your help

I think all you can do is to inspect the tank and hole under the flapper for debris or scale build up. Clean anything you notice. You may try replacing the flapper, very cheap. Its a long shot but may change the sound. Adjust the water level in the tank to about 1" below the top of the white overflow tube. No real plumber would tell you this but if the noise really bothers you there is a chance that thin foam weather striping, adhesive back on one side, can be applied to the top lip of the tank. When the lid is put into place the sound should be diminished, another long shot.
