Hello,

My wife and I are planning a Bathroom remodel and we would like to move the toilet from its exsisting location across the room where the shower is now located. Our house is built on a concrete slab. Is it possible to install a toilet on the same drain. If not can i extend the drain from the exsisting toilet to this area and cap off the exsisting shower drain?

Hey RTN.

I am afraid you cannot tie a toilet into an old shower drain...pipe is simply going to be too small.

You can extend the old toilet waste line over...you will also probably need to send a 2" vent line off that toilet waste line as well. But that depends on how far you are moving the drain line. Get back to me with distance moving toilet and I can tell you if you need to add vent (probably can't use shower vent as it is going to be 1.5 inch pipe...toilet vent needs to be 2 inch vent).

If the toilet will not end up over 12' from a vent with a 4" branch or 10' for a 3" branch you should be good to go without having to run a separate vent. These measures cover SPC and IPC,(Standard and International ) codes. If you live under the UPC,(Uniform) code the measures are 10' for a 4" branch and 6' for a 3" branch. Hope this helps. Tom

Hi guys...hey Tom..not to be a smarty..I swear. But in my UPC book measure for 3" pipe is 8 feet. I quote almost exclusive to the UPC book ...but always preface with the fact that codes are specific to each area.

And RTN...yup, Tom's right. Depending on what code system in place where you live...you probably do not have to revent the toilet

Check with local building department if you are not sure which codes prevail in your area...and then start looking at the distance from new toilet placement back to the plumbing vent for the old toilet.
