Mixed up ball valve

Twice now I have taken apart a faucet ball valve to replace the washers and springs and found it operates strangely when I put it back together. I've lined up the slot in the ball with the ridge in the socket. I've lined up the ridge on the carn (? - the plastic thing with the triangular hole in it) and held them in place while I tightened the retaining ring and then put the handle on. The set screw on the handle does not line up with the flat part of the ball stem and the water flow and handle position are not what they were before. For instance, to turn the water off, I have to push the handle back at 11 o'clock, instead of forward at six as before. The triangular part does not align symetrically with the sink. Could I have got a bad triangle when I bought a repair kit (Delta) for a Jameco pull-out faucet? thanks for any advice. I'm going to replace this faucet, but the first one is still weird.
