Loud Noise From Toilet In Master Bath
Help, we have lived in this home for about 4 years. It was new construction. Recently we have started having a loud noise when you flush the toilet in just one bathroom. The noise actually fades away after the toilet has completed the flushing action. It does not sound like a pipe it is almost like a loud moan, the noise seems to be at its worst in the middle of the night or if no one has used that bathroom during the day. I'm thinking that it may be air in the pipes but that is as far as I can go. I do not have a clue. Do I need to hire a plumber? Thanks for any assistance any one can provide

The noise is probably coming from the valve that turns on when you flush the commode it is called a (Ballcock). To test this take the lid off the commode tank and flush it, if the noise starts lift the flaot of the walve and see if the noise stops or changes. Your valve could have many different types of floats. Some have a ball on the end of a brass rod others have a flaoting cup attached with a short rod and wire. But what ever the make up of your valve lift the float to make the water stop entering the tank. If the noise stops there is a great possibility that the valve is the problem. Another possibility is the turn off that is behind the commode. If when you lifted the float rod and it didn't change the noise then turn the handle of the cut-off that comes out of the wall. Turn it complately off if you have to but just see if this some how changes the noise. If it does that means that the rubber washer in the valve may be loose and is setting up a vibration as the water rushes by you can change the valve or you can put a new rubber on the end of the stem... Good luck.

I can't add much to the great explanation and solution given by Letmetellu but I can add a few details. Letme correctly diagnosed the problem as a loose washer vibrating against the seat as the tank filled. To repair this, turn the water off at the angle stop located under the tank. I'm going to assume that you have a float ball type of ballcock and not a can type.
Remove the three screws on top of the ballcock and pull the float ball rod assembly up and out. You will see the stem and washer assembly. Pry the washer out and turn it over and reinsert it. Now hold your hand over the open valve and turn on the angle stop for just a second to flush out the supply. Reassemble everything and give it a flush. Noise all gone? If the noise still persists then do as Letmetellu suggests and replace the ball cock but my bet's on a quiet flush. Good luck, Tom
