Leak in new bathroom pop up drain
We have spend all morning installing a new faucet and pop up drain in our bathroom. Everything works fine except the drain is leaking right underneath at the black gasket. We have done everything according to the instructions and put putty underneath the part the is visible from the top. We put the gasket as tight as possible to the sink and it keeps leaking water right there. This is supposed to be a simple thing. I am not sure if I should use putty on the bottom as well. Also I am trying to figure out why the drain has holes in the metall piece. Obviously, water is going to get behind there. I am also thinking that is the water that is now leaking. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Europelady:

The holes in the pop-up assembly are to allow water to flow down the overflow hole in the sink and fall into the drain pipe... supposed to be like that... ;)

In terms of that leak you're talking about, take the pop-up assembly apart and then reputty the top part like you did last time, and this time spin the nut and washer (RP6140) and push the rubber gasket (RP6142) down tight away from the sink. Add some pipe dope (pipe thread sealant... see image) to these threads and then install the assembly by spinning the nut as you normally would... this will pull the gasket up and into place. This can be a little annoying in that it makes the job take longer (spinning nut and gasket up to the sink), but the pipe dope on the threads with the gasket should finish sealing this up permanently!

The putty will seal the top part (RP23060).

Did you have threads on 1.25" tailpiece (RP6128) on the bottom 1/2 of the assembly? If so, these threads need to have pipe dope applied as well.

Let us know if this made sense.. OK?

If Marks directions don't work, get another pop up assembly.

Had that same problem a few months ago. Went through about 3 pop ups before I got one that would seal. Problem not with pop ups, problem is sink was made in China, some slight difference in hole size and the rubber gasket would squeeze up into hole. All the pop ups looked the same but different manufacturer.

This black washer pushes against the body of the sink. Yes, sometimes, when seal is not too flexible and/or the body of the sink is uneven, it will leak. But most of the time we just tighten the nut as tight as we possible can and leak will stop. Try again...

I dinged up my sink where the gasket goes so it was leaking there. I took the pop-up off and sanded the plastic/composite sink to a smooth even lip for the gasket. Put the pop-up back together and seems to have solved the leaking problem... moral of the story is to make sure the lip of the sink where the gasket touches doesn't have an uneven chip or gouge in it. Whoops :-).
