leak in bathtub overflow

Dear Sirs,

I have a leak in my bathroom and water is leaking down to the ceiling of my neighbor. I have been told that it is a leaking overflow. Currently there is a three stem system, hot, cold, shower/tub. My plumber has indicated that he can put in a one valve system and fix the overflow below the tub for $1,900. Is this a good price?

Thanking you in advance
Don

Okay Don...how do you know that the tub overflow drain is leaking downstairs..?

Is it possible it is the packing nuts at the three handle shower?? Did the plumber remove the handles from the three handles and determine if they were causing leak..?

Get back to me with answers....

Answer Marks questions. This leak could be leaky bonnet packing nuts on the tub valve, it could come from tile grout that's shrunk over the years allowing water to seep down to the floor. Could be a bad joint in the trap raiser, in short unless the plumber has looked and located a overflow leak. We get very few of these. Tell me! .How often do you fill the tub so that it overflows? That along makes me wonder about your plumber. Now for the price. Say $200 for a one handled valve, At the outside three hours labor at 75$ per brings it up to $425. And your plumber wants almost two grand to do the job. I retired too damm soon if that's what plumbers are charging no days. Before I paid that kind of money I would get at least three esitimates. It sure sounds to me like he's planing a Aruba vacation at your expense. Good luck and let me know what the other estimates are. Tom
