Kitchen sink overflowing from upstairs water

I live in a two story house and my downstairs kitchen sink is overflowing everytime we use the upstairs toliets, shower or washing machine. It does not overflow if we use the downstairs bathroom or dishwasher. We called a plumber to get an estimate and they said something is clogged in the drain and will cost $375 to fix. I do not have any money to pay that cost. Is there something I can do myself to unclogg it? I can not imagine it being anything other than possibly a tampon.

Get a 2nd opinion. You've definately got a main drain problem, but snaking it out should not cost anywhere near $375.

NEVER flush tampons down the toilet. I manage 400 apartments and have drain snakings done several times a year. 95% of the time, the problem is tampons or paper towels that have been flushed.

Hi Cole,

If you don't like a 375 buck rip I can walk you through the process. You'll have to rent a Ridgid K-60 or equivalent sewer machine and have access to the roof vents. Interested? Tom
