Here are a few tips on sump pumps; sump pumps should have its own dedicated power source and circuit. Because it is always near or in water, a sump pump should have an outlet with a ground fault interrupter.

The PVC piping leading pumped water out of the whole should be outfitted with a check valve, which only allows water to flow in one direction. This way, the pumped water will not rush back into the sump hole.

The sump pump should be cleaned 4 times a year. Disconnect the power source. Detach the PVC pipe connectors, and then remove the pump. Sump pumps have screens that block out larger particles from entering the pump mechanism, and these should be cleaned. The insides of PVC pipe connectors should also be cleaned.

When purchasing a sump pump, you should determine whether a 1/3 horsepower is sufficient for your needs. Alternatively, you may consider a 1/2 horsepower pump. In most situations, a 1/3 hp pump is sufficient, though in areas with heavy water build-up, a 1/2 hp pump will pump the water out faster and higher. Sump pumps usually come with charts explaining their pumping rates.

Sump pump piping should not be diverted into sewage systems or septic tanks. These are usually already heavily taxed during heavy rainfall or snowmelt, and pumping more water in would further stress either system.

The pumped water should be evacuated at least 20 feet away from the house, preferably down the grade of the house.

Battery - Emergency Sump Pump Systems

A 12 volt battery back-up sump pump from Little Giant provides extra protection in the event the primary sump pump (not included) fails, an obstruction in the sump pit blocks flow, the main pump is prevented from operating, a power outage occurs due to storms or any other cause of excess water accumulation in the sump pit. The system also functions as an alarm system if the pump discharge line becomes blocked.

The back-up system is powered by a 12V battery (not included). A controller/charger monitors the battery condition and charges the battery when required. It also alerts the homeowner when the system has operated or when possible flooding conditions exist.

The system uses a high capacity, deep cycle battery (not included) that can provide in excess of 9 hours of continuous operation (using a 140 amp-hour battery) and pump up to 19,000 gallons of water (at 1 ft. head) continuously. Actual operation conditions usually result in intermittent use.
    System Includes:
    Pump
    - 12V DC
    - 1,000 GPH @ 10 ft. head
    - Maximum flow: 1,600 GPH
    - Shut-Off at 21'
    - 6" x 5¼" x 4¼"

    Controller/Charger
    - 10-amp charger
    - Audible alarm:
When pump runs (stays on after pump stops & must be reset).
    When battery is discharged
    - Indicator lights (LED's)
    Power 'On'
    Battery charging
    Battery fully charged
    - 11" x 6 5/8" x 4¼"

    Other Components
    - Float switch
    - Pump mounting bracket/clamps
    - Ty-wraps
    - Check valve
    - Battery box (for 105 to 140 amp-hour battery)
    - Fuse holder for 15 amp slow-blow fuse
    - PVC discharge pipe connection tee
Note: recommended battery is a 12V deep cycle marine battery (not included).

FUQuestion : How much do these marine batteries cost for these sump pumps please?

Answer : If you will paste up; http://www.go2marine.com/frameset.js...d/70903F/&df=1 on your address bar you will find prices. They range between $58.50 for a 12 volt/405 amp cold crank to $ 91.35 for a 12 volt/675 amp cold crank deep cycle marine battery.
