How to wire a 20-40# pumptrol pressure switch for a deep well?
Hi all: My daughter asked me to wire power to her deep water well... I will be using #12 2 wire w/ ground through a 20 amp circuit breaker to a 20-40# pumptrol pressure control switch... The pumptrol has four terminals in a line, the two end terminals are marked "L" and the two center terminals are marked "M"... The 240V wire to the pumtrol is provided by 1 black feed line and 1 white line, (each 120V)... The lines from the pumptrol to the pump are 1 black and 1 red. Each set has a ground wire... My question is; To which terminal does each individual wire connect too? Any help will be appreciated. Many thanks in advance. Don

You need to use heavier wire than 12/2. Or that is what I would want to do. I would use at least 10/2 wg.

Connect the black and white wires from the electrical panel to the "L" terminals. The "L" stands for line. Connect the black and red to the pump motor to the "M" terminals. Twelve (12) gauge wire is the correct size for a 20 amp circuit. If this is a new pump installation, check the amperage draw of the pump and the installation instructions. If the distance to the well including the depth of the well is greater that 100 feet you should consider voltage drop in sizing the wire if the amperage draw is anywhere close to 20 amps, which I doubt.

When the contacts stick it's time to replace.
L1 and L2 are the 2 hot leads from the panel or breaker. T1 and T2 are the 2 feeds to the pump. And, of course the green terminals are the ground. No neutral is needed. Common practice is to put the black on L1 and the white on L2. Bare wire to green terminal. Hope this answers your question. Good luck, Tom
