How to remove silt in well
I live in a house that is 20 years old and the well (which I think was redug once by previous owners or the level was changed) has been putting silt into the filter. We have to change the filters often (sometimes more than once a week) because they fill with silt. It also trips the breaker when the filter gets clogged. My husband is an electrician so he can work on the electrical stuff but how do you fix the well issue? Can it be done by the home owner? If we call in a well company how pricey is that for them to look at it and fix it?Thanks for any input on this matter. ( I think the pump is down approx 500 feet)

At 500 feet I don't think you can fix it. Think about pulling 500 feet of pipe filled with water. You should be able to get advice from a well driller about possible solutions at very little or no cost. One possible solution may be the installation of a sand trap. A sand trap is large tank usually installed vertically. You pump water into it, usually at about half way up the side and take water out of the top. The water sits in the tank for a while allowing the sand to settle to the bottom. The larger the tank the longer the water stays in the tank and the more the sand settles out. You periodically have to flush the sand out of the bottom, of course. It is usually installed ahead of the pressure tank.
