How do you remove the broken closet flange from a cast iron drain pipe?
I have a broken cast iron pipe and want to remove the broken section to replace it but it is sealed with something, lead I think. I am worried that doing so might break the good pipe. How can this be done with out damaging the good pipe?

You have a lead and oakum caulked joint that first must be remogved.

To remove a poured lead and oakum joint take a 3/8" drill bit and drill a few holes down past the lead and into the oakum.. Push a screwdriver under the lead ring and lever it up. Once it's free you can began to peel the lead ring out. Now pick out the oakum and you can pull the joint apart. You may now pull the flange up and out. Good luck, Tom
