house water pump not working

Asked Jul 20, 2012, 10:52 PM — 2 Answers
Early today water was running fine through out the house, then this evening while doing laundry, I noticed that we had no water at all. My son went out to check the pump and it's not cutting on at all . We checked the water pressure, it was fine, but when he tapped on the pump itself that's when it cut on. After running the water for a minute or so, we lost water again, and he noticed that the pump is not cutting on. We checked to see if anything like ants were stopping up the contacts, a problem we had last summer , but they were fine. We have no running water in the house...What else could be causing the pump to not cut on?

The pump is controlled by a pressure switch. It sounds like your switch is attached directly to the pump. Remove the cover from the switch and check to see if the points are closed (touching). If they are, then the pump should be on. If they are not, then you have a switch problem.

Thanks for replying so quickly! We got out there during the daylight, and took a piece of sandpaper and tried to clean off the connection, it is still not cutting on like it should. My son got it to turn on once and we got 40lbs of pressure , but it won't cut on by itself so It seems to be the switch. I will have to get someone to out and change it out for me. Thanks again!

Water Pump not working [ 2 Answers ]

We had cold weather and we lost our water. It still hasn't come back. We replaced a blown fuse but it still doesn't work. Does the pump come on even if it needs to be primed? It makes no sounds. Does this mean that the motor is burned out? Or do I just need to prime it? Thank you.
