Hot water in the shower until shower head installed

I have hot water in all my other faucets/showers. I also have hot water at the particular shower with the problem as long as a shower head is not installed. When I install the shower head, the water is lukewarm. Any ideas for the source of the problem, and how to fix?

I'll be glad to help just as soon as you tell me the brand name and modelb of the tub and shower valve. In the mean time, every new shower head has a water saver installed. This will be a rubber washer with holes around the outsides. Pry it out and toss it. Now reinstall the shower head and try it. Better now? Tom

speedball1 - Thanks for the quick reply. Removing the water saver helped a little, but didn't completely solve the problem. Still a significant difference in the temperature of the water coming out the shower pipe with and without the shower heard. I have a Kohler shower valve. Any help you can provide would be much appreciated. Thanks!

speedball1 - I forgot to tell you the model, but I don't know the model. It is over 10 years old.

I'm sorry but your problem is unusual because it involves back pressure from the shower head. Without a exploded diagram to go by I can't be of much help. Is your valve temperature or pressure controlled? I have to know what you have inside the valve in order to see where the trouble is. Could you take a picture and have a Kohler dealer tell you what it is from his old catalogs? regards, Tom

speedball1 - After looking at the Kohler website for a while, the valve that looks the most like the one I have is the last one in the attached diagram. I think the model is Coralais. Thanks again for your help.

It looks like the image didn't come through. Here's the URL address.
