    Hissing sound from Toilet tank.
I've got a constant hissing sound coming from the left side of the tank. Similar to air being pushed/sucked. At one point, too much water was in the tank and a small trickle was noticed too. But that has since stopped after I took the cover off and flushed a few times.

Taking the cover off, this sound seems to be coming from small "vents" between where the filler float sits up top and the cap of the filler valve. I can muffle the sound by putting my fingers over the holes. I also tried shutting the water off to the tank, once doing this the hiss stops.

    Please advise.

You need to manually adjust the black float metal rod so the float is not that high. The float controls the shut off mechanism and somehow the float got too high. That should solve your funny hisss sound and keep you from wasting water unnecessarily.

The first one, and the "vents" I refer to are near the critical level marker. I can take a picture of it if that helps.

Is the "critical level" mark at least a inch over the top of the white overflow tube? Is the tank water level set 1/2 inch below the top of the overflow when the tanks' filled and the ballcock shut down? Feel around the flappers flat edge. If it's wavy or you feel rough spots replace the flapper. It sure sounds like water is running steady into the ballcock, that would give you your hissing sound. A way to check this would be to lift the float can up and see if the noise stops. Let me give you a "bare bones" lesson on tank adjustments.
Check the tank water level, it should be at the mark in the tank or 3/8 to 1/2" below the top of the over flow tube. Now look at the flapper, If it has wavey edges on the flat surface, replace it. The linkage between the flapper and the flush lever should have 1/4" play when the tank is filled. Also, check the small tube coming out of the top of the bakkcock and make sure it's connect to and draining into the white overflow tube. From your discription it sounds like a bad flapper or the tank level's too high. Check and let me know. Good luck, Tom

I've managed to fix it by adjusting the float. I guess the spring clip somehow (Lets attribute it to general wear and tear) was higher up, by setting the rod lower it now fills the tank less and shuts off properly. My water level is now 1' below the overflow tube.

Now I know the basics for future issues, thank you for all the suggestions.

I just tried closing the on off valve that connects the water supply with tank of the toilet and then opened it slowly to almost midway.
It helped and now there is no hissing.

Thanks for your input but look in the upper left hand corner. You're responding to a two year old thread. Cheers, Tom
