Grundfos recirc pump - ticking noise and pump warm to the touch - Normal?

Asked Jan 28, 2011, 11:53 AM — 2 Answers
We have an approx 8 y/old Grundfos recirc pump on our hot water line and today I notice it is making a ticking noise (first time I've noticed this) and it is "quite" warm to the touch--I've never touched it before so I'm not sure if this is always the case. Should I be worried? I don't recall that it made a ticking sound previously and I'm about to go out of town overnight...any help is apreciated.

Hi Zoedog...

As long as the delivery of hot water is as it has always been then you are fine. Pumps run and get warm/hot, but the pump should shut down when the thermostat is satisfied. The ticking sound isn't exactly "normal", but not unreasonable either.

If hot water delivery takes longer at the farthest faucet, for example, then you may have a bad pump but it certainly poses no danger as worst case it just won't circulate water anymore... In this case, just get it replaced when you get home this weekend.

Good luck!

I purchased a grundfos recirculation pump for my hot water system and I'm planning the installation. The thing is pretty heavy and there are no attach points to mount the pump itself. I'm installing it on a wall with 16" center studs. With only 1/2" copper spanning the 16" with the pump...

Recirc pump runs very hot [ 4 Answers ]

Hi, I'm replacing a recirc pump while also installing a new water heater. It's a Taco 1/2" model and I'm concerned about how quickly it heats up and how hot it gets; concerned enough that I've not actually run it for more than 10 minutes for fear of damaging it. It gets almost too hot to...
