    Groaning toilet after flush
Our toilet makes a horrible groaning/screeching noise after being flushed. Currently intermittent, but seems to be getting more frequent. Toilet is original to the house, I think, and was installed in 1984 or so. Pipes are original as well. Just started making noise about 2 weeks ago. Trying to tie the noise down to that repairs can be made. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance. -James

When does the noise occur, during actual flushing or after the flush while the tank is refilling?

    Hi James...

I think Hkstroud missed the AFTER THE FLUSH part... ;)

If the toilet fill valve is original to the house then it is time to replace the fill valve assembly.

I would recommend that you go to a home improvement store and pick up a FLUIDMASTER fill valve and a new toilet braided supply hose... see images.

Then, shut off the water supply to the toilet, flush the toilet and empty the tank of water, disconnect the water supply tube, disconnect the old toilet fill valve, and install the new toilet fill valve as per the instructions on the fill valve box (be sure to set the water level to 1/2" or so BELOW the overflow tube). Connect the new braided hose and turn the water supply on and see how you did here. Pretty easy job, overall!
