    Hey Seazen...

You sure can... :) If you have a dishwasher it will connect into the disposal connection on the disposal itself. It is important to remove the KNOCKOUT PLUG from the disposal dishwasher connection BEFORE connecting the dishwasher hose to the disposal.

Let us know if need more info.

John, this is very helpful. I have one question: I have a single sink and wanted to install a waste disposal unit. I was told by Home Depot that I could not as it was against Code and also every time I turned on the water I would have to flip on the disposal so the water would empty. Do you concur?

    Thanks.

Hi journey and welcome to The Plumbing Page at AskMeHelpDesk.com
I was told by Home Depot that I could not as it was against Code and also every time I turned on the water I would have to flip on the disposal so the water would empty.
And now you know why big box store guys are inside selling instead of out in the field doing plumbing. Both statements are- Wrong! Wrong! Wrong! Your disposal has a port to drain your dishwasher into. You'll have no problems with a single tub sink. Good luck, Tom.

    Hi Alara

Only reason you may not be able to install a disposal is if you are on a septic tank, but even then they have specialized disposals (enzyme injecting) for these cases.

Further, as long as the disposal plate didn't get clogged with food particles and as long as the sink is properly vented you will have absolutley no issue with your sink draining.

Home depot guy way off... AGAIN!

I'd check with your local plumbing inspector to be sure, but you should have no issues!

    Hi Mark,
Only reason you may not be able to install a disposal is if you are on a septic tank,
Our code mandates ALL kitchens and washers drain into a grease trap before entering a septic tank. The grease trap goes in the same time as the outside drainage goes down. REgards, Tom

Yeah, but in my State each town/city gets to determine if people with septic tank systems can install a disposal or not. In some towns, some inspectors simply won't allow them... not even the septic tank enzyme injector disposals!

Alara needs to check her local codes as they may not allow them after all!

    Good night!

Yeah! Same here Mark! Every key/ island/ small town has their own codes but I've worked the West Gulf Coast from Tampa to Naples and none of them, outlaw disposals. It's simply good plumbing practice to install a grease trap along with a new septic system. Regards, Tom
