    Frozen submersible pump
    I live in Catskills on the mountain and neighbors that have wells have sulphur smelling water. So I take the water from the brook that runs by my house, a brook that is fed with springs about 1/4 mile upstream.
    Last night it was so cold that my submersible pump in the creek froze. It was partly up and partly in the water. What is you suggestion, should it be all in the water? If it is then the relief valve would be also in the water and then the rubber water pipes to the house, which are outside would freeze.
    Any suggestions?

    Pump should be in a sump in the water. The pipes should be buried below the frost line in your area. You may need a different pump.

    I'm also wondering, if you could design a system that would empty the pipe when it's close to freezing when the pump stops.

    They make a water valve that allows flow one way you can use it to keep water going or not.

    But the smell you mentioned is from iron. Buy a qt. of CHEAP clorax and pour half or more depends on water and well depth every 6 months and your water will not stink or be dark. I don't like the rotton egg smell either.

    Did the stream freeze solid. Arte you sure it isn't just the water in your piping that froze? Last question, does this pump push water uphill to your home or down hill?
