Foul smell in kitchen drain

Asked Jul 16, 2006, 02:28 PM — 2 Answers
I have had a problem with a very bad odor in my kitchen sink drain since the weather got warm. My home is new and is a manufactured home in a park. I have used gel drain openers followed by boiling water and when that did not work I used a box of baking soda, 1cup of salt and 1 cup of vinegar, let it fizz for 15 minutes and then flush with 4 qts. Of boiling water. The fix is only good for a few days, then the smell returns. I sure do need some good advice. PS. The smell comes mostly from the disposal side of the sink and I do have a dishwasher.

Hi Wanda,

What side of the sink did you put all those concoctions down? The drain side or the disposal side? I hate to even mention this to a brand new mobile home owner but In my area are many trailer manufactures. Oops! Mobile Home! Back in the 70's when construction was a down I would wouk as a plumber until things picked up. Sometimes vents are overlooked and left open in the wall without running out the roof. To check this all you need to do is go outside and look up at your roof. There should be a pipe coming out the roof just over and a little to one side of the kitchen sink. It's probably there but I just thought I would check. If you didn't put the chemicals down the disposal side then do it and get back to me with the results. Cheers, Tom

Thanks for the helpful posts. I had a foul smelling kitchen sink on the disposal side. I saved time and money by heeding the advice of previous posts and did not call a plumber or exterminator nor did I need to buy another disposal. At first, my husband tried the bleach trick (pouring it down the drain) to no avail. Then, as someone on this site suggested, I took a sponge and wiped the underside of the disposal splash guard. A lot of gunk was on my sponge. My husband decided to get the toilet brush and scrub with bleach. What a mess. I never thought of it, but the food in the disposal splashes back up and gets caught on the splash guard. The smell is gone, thank goodness.
