Flapper refuses to go down in toilet

Asked Jan 17, 2007, 10:13 AM — 4 Answers
I recently installed my flapper in my toilet and it was working over the last couple of days. When I went to use it this morning, I noticed the flapper was not going down. In other words, it was not returning to the seat. It remained up. I loosened the chain and tightend the chain. Can anyone make any suggestions on possible resolution?

Did you cut the ring off the flapper before you installed it on the hooks?
Let me give you the tank adjustments.
With the flapper seated the linkage wants to have 1/4" of play. Too much play and the flapper doesn't get pulled back enough giving you a short flush. Too tight and it lets water seep past the flapper. I adjust the chain by the link and if it needs fine tuning, I bend the flush lever rod a bit until I have the desired play in the linkage. One more thing about a flapper. You will see where the old flapper hooks onto the base of the white overflow tube. On a older type with no hooks the flapper has a ring that slips down over the overflow tube to the seat. If your tank has hooks, take a sharp knife or scissors and cut the neoprene ring off on the marks provided and hook the flapper on the hooks. Leaving the ring on will interfere with the flush. The water level in your tank should be 3/8 to 1/2" below the top of the overflow tube when the tank's filled. Good luck, Tom

You may have worn out a few flappers by now, but if I were "Flapper," I wouldn't want to go down in it either!

A smart-mouthed newbie is just what we need here, right?

Thanks for the question and answers. Might be helpful to me and a number of others. I'm exploring the "ancient" wisdom on the site as well as watching the inflow of new stuff.

When those flappers try your patience,

Toilet Flapper Won't Drop [ 2 Answers ]

When flushed, my toilet flapper immediately raises to a 45 degree angle, but then it will not drop completely unless the handle outside the tank is pulled up (jiggling does not solve it). It drops partially, but then the chain is tight and it is does not drop further. Once you pull up the handle,...

Toilet flapper not flapping properly [ 3 Answers ]

Hi all, I live in a condo and have 2 toilets in my unit. Both were flushing fine until I replaced one of the flush lever/arm from a plastic one to a chrome one. Now, I can't seem to adjust the chain properly to get the flapper to function properly. I observed the toilet that flushes properly...

Flapper on Toilet - fixed it, but still have a ? [ 2 Answers ]

OK, I'm putting on my plumbing cap today! One of our toilets was constantly making a running water sound. When I opened it up, it appeared to me that the Flapper was very old and that was where the water was leaking into. I replaced the new flapper successfully (it was pretty easy!) and now the...

Probably a boring question: Flapper sticking in toilet [ 1 Answers ]

The flapper in the toilet is sticking in the open position causing the toilet to run (unless someone jiggles the handle to get the flapper to close). The chain was twisted around the handle, but has since been fixed. The flapper continues to stick for no apparent reason. Suggestions? Thanks.

Flapper closes to soon [ 4 Answers ]

I have a low flush toilet that has a problem. When you flush it instead of pushing the handle down and walking away you have to stand there and wait for the water to drain. I took the tank top off and looked in side. This is the kind of toilet that has the floater that is a cylinder on the input...
