face lift

I am doing some remodeling and would like to give my bathroom faucets a facelift.
I have Delta 1400 Monitor series plumbing in the tub/shower. It is now chrome. I would like to change this to brushed nickle. I understand there are some tub/shower trim kits. I called Delta and they gave me some model numbers that I can use but the questions I have is how can I be sure that they will fit using the valve that I already have. I cannot see a number on the valve. I do not want to tear into the wall. Only want to change the outside. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I might start looking, or whom I might call to get more information. The Delta web site has been down for a few days now.
