for expert speedball1

H had posted a question titled: foul smell in the bathroom after it rains heavily and in the mornings

you suggested clorox and boiling water which worked great, and I was thrilled. it rained a couple of times and it seemed like the problem was resolved. it also stopped raining for a while. Unfortunately it started raining again and the smell has come back with a vengeance.

I had yet another plumber come out and he suggested the smoke test which he charges $800.00 of which $400.00 would go towards the repairs. He said he uses a machine which uses a substance which is non toxic. my husband doesn't like being hooked like that into choosing him for the repairs. There was another guy who had suggested the smoke test but he said his was toxic and the charge was $500.00

I don't know what to do. Who to trust.

I tried calling you on skype but the system said "user not recognized"

please let me know what you suggest..... thank you

Sofi, you can trust the guys on this site. I've been watching them for a couple of years now. They are good, but sometimes it does take a while to sort things out since they are not "on site". Stick with it and don't quit.

If I can save Hubby a buck can we split it?? Why shell out big bucks when you can spot smoke as well as the next guy. They make a smoke testing kit for homeowners. If you're interested click on; Residential Smoke Testing and read. Good luck and let me know what you find. Tom

SB, the pump is about $300.00. Do you have to have that, or can you rent one? This is just for future reference, in my case.

we had the septic tank pumped and repaired about a month ago. the smell is only inside the house ... today we had the type of torrential downpour that would have normally caused the smell and nothing!!! now there is no rhyme or reason to this problem ... ahhhhhh!!!!

Missed your post earlier but have you tried rodding your vent stack from the roof? Use enough rod to reach roof top to basement plus 20'

There is always some smell from septic tank and from where your leach field is. However, usually you don't notice the smell bcs smell will rise and wind will blow it away. When it rains, you have low atmospheric pressure. That low pressure keeps smell close to the ground and around the house. That's why I asked my previous question....

Make sure all your traps are filled, especially floor drains and tub/showers that are not in everyday's use. Also, make sure all your sinks and washer have traps installed.
