Expansion tank necessary for a well pump irrigation system

Like the title says, is an expansion tank necessary in a well water pump irrigation system? I've had some trouble setting the pressure regulator settings on the well pump and I think the lack of an expansion tank might be causing some of the problems. Thanks in advance.
