Excessive Flame from Hot Water Heater Pilot Light

Recently replaced thermocouple in hot water heater due to no pilot light. Upon installation, the pilot light burns with a much higher flame than before. What might cause this?

Changing the thermocoupling should have not affected the height of pilot light, but it can be adjusted at gas valve.

Southpaw, maybe I misread your post but you said you were replacing the thermocouple because there was no pilot. Are you saying the new flame is higher than way back when the pilot was working fine?? How tall is the flame and what color.
