Converting half bath to full bath

My question refers to a half bath we are in the planning stages of converting to a full bath in the basement. Currently our basement has a half bath with toilet and sink on one half of the basement. There is then a shower on the other side of the basement with the washer and dryer, about 30 feet away that drains into the washer floor drain, 5 feet away. The shower is very "cabin"ish...wood plank floor, etc. We recently purchased this house last August.

I'm wanting to convert the Half-bath to a full bathroom with tub. Would I add the floor drain and bust up the floor and tie it into the toilet drain? The bathroom is only going to be 12' x 7', so it wouldn't be that long of a run. The main drain that leads out is about 15 feet from the toilet in the basement. Is this my best avenue? Or should I put the bathroom on the other side with the shower...

Any help is much appreciated....

Jason Clemens

Good morning Jason,

I would keep the bathroom group next to the toilet and lavatory. A basement floor drain would be nice but not necessary. However if the old shower is in the way you could convert that to a floor drain or simply tear it out and cap off and cement over the stub up.
To vent the tub you will tie it into the lavatory drain and not into the toilet main. To tie it into the toilet you would be discharging a major fixture past a unvented minor one and in plumbing that's a no-no. More questions? Just click on back. Tom

Tom,

I'm pretty new to plumbing. So I take it the Lavatory runs into the toilet from there...so we would run a floor drain from the tub into the lavatory pipe which runs into the toilet? And vent it to the lavatory pipe? It's an old house built in '47, so I'm not completely sure how it is laid out for sure.

Hey Jason,
We're gonna hafta get together on terms. Does floor drain= tub trap? Because if it don't then we have a real problem in communication. The tub drain will be wet vented by the lavatory when you connect to the lav drain pipe. Cheers, Tom

Tom,

I understand what you mean now. I went to Home Depot yesterday as well just to ask how we do it, and what you were saying made so much sense then. I just had figured all along we would have to put a floor drain in.

Thanks for the help.
Jason

Jason,

Did you ever complete this project? I'm thinking of doing the same thing...expand on a half-bath in the basement and considering raising the floor so I don't have to dig up the concrete for drainage. Let me know how it turned out. Thanks.

E, HI, I just read your responce to Jason, I just asked my first question today regarding
a upgraded of a master bath and a powder room, I would like to know if you were able
to avoid concrete demo to do your project. If so how high did your have to raise your floor??

It would be very (very) helpful if you post a drawing / or photo / of old bath and new, proposed bath.
