Do I need a new commode?
    Hello everyone,
This is my first visit to your site!
I have a flushing problem that is driving me up a wall! When the commode is flushed, the bowl fills to just short of overflowing. The water swirls around and then slowly drains down. Plunging didn’t do anything. The little vent is working. Its act like the main line is plugged. I removed the commode, the wax ring was like new, no sign of leaks. The main is not clogged. I don’t have a commode auger, but I ran a cable though the hole, from both sides. I blew though the hole with a vacuum cleaner hose from both side, the airs seems to be coming though OK. I currently have the commode laying on it’s back with the drain filled with muriatic acid. Figured I would let it set that way for about 4 hours. By-the-way, I poured a quart of it into the blow last night and let it set all night.
The vent pipe is clear. Everything in the tank seems to work OK.
This house is 9 years old, all the lines are 4” PVC, including the vent pipe. I built it myself so I know everything is correct. The commode is 3yrs old. It is one of those handicap (high) oblong bowls from HD. It has worked fine up until a few days ago. Is there some vent or line I don’t know about that could be plugged up? I ask this because, We recently had a 400lb visitor that has to use the plunger every time he goes. Carries one in his suitcase. Thought he may have forced solids into some hole I don’t know about.
    Sorry this is so long.
    Thanks.

By "little vent" do you mean the small hole, (jet) located in the bowl? Your friendc may have clogged the branch drain to the toilet. I knowfno hole he could have forced solids into. You should have purchased a closet auger before pulling the bowl. What happens when you flush paper down? Regards, Tom

    Thanks for the response!
Yes, I checked that little 5/8" hole. The correct name for it escapes me presently. It responds the same with or without any thing besides water in the bowl. The main line is clear. I poured 5 gals of water down it, and could hear it go pouring into the septic tank. I designed the bath so that the shower and sinks are behind the commode to help move things along. Guess I will make the 30 mile trip into town and get another auger. (Don't ever loan your tools to anyone:).
I been a home owner and a DIY for 45 yrs, never had a problem like this before! Was hoping you young duds would have some new ideas. I kind of blame it of these new water saving commode.

Sorry, I can't offer any help but since you're new, as I am, I thought I would point something out. Tom (Speedball1) seems to be the resident plumbing expert here and as I suppose you could call me a young "dud" as you stated, I don't think Tom fits this profile. According to his profile posted on this site he has 50 years on me... no offense Tom. He seems to be an excellent plumbing resource... I just wish he lived next door to me. :) Good luck with your problem.

Just wanted to let everyone know I found the problem. I got a commode auger, and when it went though with no resistance, I decided to see what was going on in there. I used an old miniature security camera on the end of some flex conduct. It turns out there was about a 4 inch section with the top half of the tube blocked solid. I modified the end of the auger to make it larger, keep going back and forth until it finally broke loose. I then plugged the hole, set the commode upside down and filled tube with muriatic acid, and let it set for an hour. Hosed it out and it works great again. This was a new one for me!
    Thanks for the help.

Just thought I'd give you some information. Unless they are cracked or broken commodes don't wear out. Changing the tank parts puts them back good as new. Glad you found your trouble. Tom
