We recently moved into a new home and have some issues with our kitchen faucet. When we turn on the faucet, often, no water comes out of the faucet right away but the water goes to the sprayer. If we run the sprayer for about ten seconds and we stop, it will then switch back to the faucet. Is there something I can look for that might be causing this problem.

If the water is running normally in the rest of the house, there is no logical way to explain why water is running out of the sprayer instead of the faucet. That also make it complicated to explain why no water comes out of the faucet right away.

My suggestion would be to change the sprayer assembly. Usually, the sprayer will not work until you have engaged the nozzle of the sprayer.

Since the faucet and sprayer is hooked up on the same incomming water suply to the sink, the pressure should always remain to the sprayer and the faucet. So which ever you turn on or engage, that is where the water comes out.

To think even more critical on this solution, on a regular faucet, if you slightly turn the water on, you will notice it take the water a while before it come out of the faucet. It is only when you turn the water on at full speed that the water comes out of the faucet.

This suggests that there is a problem with the valve which control the water flow (faucet). It may be stripped, causing you to turn the valve on, when in reality you are just twisting the knob.

So my advice would be to be consistent in investigating the problem, including cleaning the filters or screens (located on the two ends of the faucet). However, a new faucet may be more expensive than relacing the valve and gaskets to your old one.

We have good people here. I think that when Tom answers, he will explain there is a diverter that switches the water from the faucet to the sprayer when you open the valve on the sprayer. Likely it isn't working right. It may only take cleaning it. Since the diverter is in the faucet, replacing the sprayer will be a waste of money. take the screen out of the faucet and then turn on the water and see if some dirt comes out that mybe blocking the faucet when first started

After some more research it seems others with my faucet model have the exact same problem I'm having...it seems it is the diverter as labman suggested.
