Delta faucet gunked up

I have a Delta Faucet model 173 `Waterfall' which has the single handle separate from the spout. After I did some plumbing work the flow is low which implies it is `gunked' up.
I need to know how to get the handle apart to clean it out. I got the Handle off easily and the Adjusting Ring (part names from the Installation Manual) but don't know what to take off next. There is a Cap w/Adjusting Ring that has a hex molded into it and I tried to unscrew it but it didn't budge and I didn't want to force it unless it was truly the next thing to undo.
Any help would be appreciated.
Richard

To confirm: I have the original Installation Manual dated 1996 which covers the three variations of this faucet arrangement of which mine is handle and spout only (no sprayer) and the models included are 172, 173 and 174.

Hey Richard,

I'm having a problem pulling up specs on your Delta# 173. Is this what you have? (See image) Regards, Tom
