Cultured Marble Tub?

ok guys, gotta good deal on a large cultured marble tub + surround from local manufacter. My first pick was a large cast iron tub but no way for me to easily move it in the house. Cultured marble man is going to install the tub and surround for me. The material looks very strong and durable. Gel coat on the unit may scratch a little over time.

My question is, any experiances (good/bad) with the stuff for tubs? Better or about equal to acrylic?

Hi Brian,
Much better and classier then plastic or fiberglass. One thing, DO NOT use plumbers putty for a drain seal. Use Silicon Jel. Putty has oil that will leach out into the marble and stain it. Good luck and I'm sure you'll be happy with your choice. Tom

Just understand what you have is filled polyester resin, not marble. You spray gel coat into the mold, and then pour in polyester resin with ground limestone in it. It is an economical way of creating classy fixtures. Keep abrasive cleaners away from it just as you would an acrylic. Chemically, you are not far off from a fiberglass boat. I have worked for companies that made the polyester resin and gel coats.
