I am concerned about just connecting up to pvc or whathaveyou to change the system over with the crack being in cast iron floor level.
Any help anyone can give is greatly appreciated.

A Photo would be helpful.
There are a number of means of repairing a section of cracked cast iron pipe, usually by means of sleeving the pipe internally, but a cracked hub is an altogether different animal.
Basically, if the crack is in the hub, then excavation and replacement is your best option.
