I was in the shower today, and noticed the water not draining. I pushed the lever down to stop the water, then put it up to open it all the way. This has fixed it in the past. Today, the plug did not go back up. I was able to use a screwdriver and pull the plug up. Now, when I did that, I pulled the plug out, and the arm it is attached to. I can see that the arm goes into the back of the drain. At the end of the arm it forms a flat V. There is a notch in the middle, and small holes on either side. Is there a broken part inside? I attempted to put the assembly back into the hole. It would go in but the trip lever would not work it. The plug would always be in the closed position. Any help on fixing this would be appreciated.

Hey Joe:

Check out the picture below. It is an older style tub waste and overflow assembly. I think this is what you were describing to us.

This is not like the newer tub wastes...this one has a removable stopper/plug.

The trick to this whole thing is to engage the trip lever so it allows the rocker arm to set in under the coil. Here, push down on trip lever (raises coil) and then slip that stopper back into place. Then see if trip lever engages the stopper. Try this..let me know if we are on track!!

Also note that these coil type tub waste and overflow assemblies can have the upper mechanism removed (see pic. #2 below) and then can clean hair/soap, etc., off the coil...that should help reduce the frequency of clogs.
