We have a porcelain over steel tub that has started to leak to our downstairs. We pulled away the ceiling and saw that the tub looks like it is corroding around the drain. Is this something we can repair ourselves? Would installing a new drain fix the problem? How would that work? Of course, this had to happen on the Fourth of July weekend. Thanks!

It's not the drain that's giving you the trouble it's the tub. Is there a piece of the tub that's ate up near the drain? If not perhaps it's just a case of the seal under the lip of the drain that's leaking. Get a small jar of plumbers putty and unscrew the drain and check around the tub hole. If it looks Ok then reinstall the drain using a rope of putty for a seal. Now if the edges of the hole are crumbling and ate up you still might be able to fill the holes using Propoxy20. This is steel reinforced epoxy putty that hardens like metal. Make a rope of that and set the drain. Be sure to clean off the excess as it hardens like steel in 20 minutes.
